The Benefits of Advanced Reporting: Introducing the Kontera Channels

October 30, 2008

Knowledge is power- and website publishers know it well.  This is what makes tools like Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools so useful and so popular. The general idea is that the more you know about your site’s user-behavior and visitor interests, the higher your chances of meeting the needs of those visitors.  In this sense, the information you are able to accumulate will serve your monetization efforts and contribute to your overall success.

Gaining a better understanding of your site’s metrics is a key factor in making the most out of Kontera’s PPC advertising. Kontera publishers already benefit from several useful reporting options such as the URL and Keyword reports. Today we’re excited to introduce the latest addition to the Kontera Publisher Center - the Reporting Channels.

What Are Channels and How Can I Use them?

The Channels feature offers a deeper level of analysis than that provided by overall reports. This new feature enables you to create individual reporting for a combination of pages or sections of your website and track and compare performance to that of other sections. By creating and employing Channels you’ll get comprehensive reporting for each section of your website and gain a better understanding of where your clicks are coming from.

How Do I Create Channels?

A few simple steps to follow:

  1. Contact us via the “Help Tab” in the Kontera Publisher Center and request to enable “Channels.” You’ll be notified via email that the feature has been activated on your account.
  2. Login to your account and select the “ContentLink Setup” tab. Follow the “Create Tag” link and then click on the “Create Channel” Button.
  3. channels-1.gif

A new field will open. Fill in the Channel name and click on the “Submit Channel” button.

  4. The system will now create your modified tag to include an additional line of code specifying its channel ID.
  5. channels3.gif

  6. Copy and paste this new tag on all the pages you’d like associated with this particular channel.
Be sure to replace your current Kontera tag with the modified tag on all the channel’s pages.

That’s it! Your Channels have been set.

To view all the channels you’ve created, select the “ContentLink Setup” tab and follow the “Channel” Link.

5 Most Recommended Sites by the Kontera Team

October 27, 2008

We all like to recommend our favorite websites, articles we find interesting or other attention-grabbing news stories.  In fact, social networking largely thrives on the idea that we love to share our web findings with our online friends.  Today, some of us at Kontera gathered to give recommendations of our favorite sites.  Thought you’d be interested in paying a visit:

Tripit Adi Elimelech, a Kontera Ruby Developer, recommends www.tripit.com. “Tripit is a site that helps you to quickly organize all your travel plans, and saves you the job by creating an actual itinerary of your trip.  I discovered it after some of my friends used it to plan their trip.  It’s a great website and an original utility- like having a personal automated travel agent”.
Mahalo Gabi Peles, Kontera’s Director, Product & Operations browses through a relatively new engine, www.mahalo.com. “I discovered Mahalo not long ago and I have come to appreciate it. Mahalo is a kind of a user generated search-engine, where each page provides a rich description of the keyword sought”.
Woot Ariel Gluckson, Publisher Support Coordinator tells about Woot.com. “Woot.com is a site I visit often to see what’s today’s buy. I think it takes a creative edge to blow-out sales tactics. Every day Woot lists one product for a 24 hour time period and sells it at a price well under the retail.  I’d totally recommend anyone to at least have a look”.
K21 Mika Tal, Publisher Services Manager recommends  k21st.wordpress.com.  “K21 is a blog that aggregates all the best of new thought innovation in practically every known field. It includes everything that goes under the conception of futurism, bringing the latest advancements in various fields and incorporating them into one accessible arsenal of knowledge”.
Ruby Barak Levi, a QA team member spends his free time learning Ruby (a true programming devotee). His recommendations are all Ruby related. “I recommend www.ruby-lang.org and railscasts.com to anyone interested in getting into the world of Ruby.  These sites contain documentation and guides and screencasts that tell you how to start from zero and build your way up to becoming a top Ruby on Rails programmer.”

Kontera’s Top Clicked Keywords; From Politics To Beyonce

October 16, 2008

To be a successful marketer, one must know how to move with the trend, change with the current fashion. A quick look at the Keywordsmost clicked keywords of any week reveals all sorts of interesting facts on what’s popular these days and where public attention is turned.

As promised, we are delivering the next in a keyword report series:

Not surprisingly, matters of finance and politics are now winning more clicks than at any other time in the past year (though we cannot show the actual number of clicks, we can definitely show rank).
On another note, Beyonce just turned into an ultra popular keyword and a quick look in Google reveals (to those of us who aren’t so MTV savvy) that her new singles are freshly released.  And of course, “Halloween” is climbing its way to the top, no tricks ;)

As we well know, some keywords never get old.  For example, in apparel beauty, keyword “hairstyle” always remains at the top.  “Free downloads”, of course, always wins a place at top of computing category.

Browsing Through YouTube

October 07, 2008

Have you ever tried to Google your own name? How about the name of that old college friend… I wonder where he is today…

Though I haven’t seen any research figures, I’m sure at this day and age it’s not an uncommon practice- if for no other reason than sheer curiosity.  Google seems to be everywhere, just wondering- do I rank? ;)

I often scout the web using the name “Kontera”, but not only on Google.   I love social networks and I often look around to see what interesting things people have to say. In a most recent such venture through YouTube, I ran into a great video that was made several months ago and submitted to Kontera’s Video Testimonial Contest.  I think it deserves more attention than it received and so I’ve decided to post it on our blog.

Can I Control the Density of Kontera ContentLink Ads on My Site?

October 02, 2008

In a previous post we’ve defined Link Density as “the concentration of ContentLink ads within a publisher’s content; the higher a site’s link density, the more ContentLinks are presented per page.”
Lamp People
Now we’d like to answer the question: What determines a site’s link density?

Generally, it has to do with the amount of text a site has.  ContentLinks, being in-text ads, are a perfect fit for text rich sites.  So the more textual content you have on your site, the more ContentLinks will appear.  Another factor has to do with the topic of a site.  Let’s face it, not all site topics were created equal.  Popularity of topics is interchangeable and may also vary throughout the year, as does the advertisers’ demand of a particular keyword.

To define link density through a more mathematical approach we’ll say the following:  a link density of 10 would mean a maximum of 10 keywords out of 100 words will be highlighted on a page.

Link density can be changed by Kontera’s optimization team.  To change the link density on your site, login to kontera’s Publisher Center and click on the help tab to contact support with your request.
